SESSION 1

LIVE: 9AM - 10AM

AUSTEN’S GLOBAL FASHION INDUSTRY

Presented by Hilary Davidson

Austen’s heroines dress in a way that we think of being specifically English. But Regency era fashion has influences and impacts around the globe, as Hilary will discuss.

SESSION 2

LIVE: 10.20AM - 11.20AM

ORANGE AND CLOVE POMANDER

Presented by Kelly Lock

Pomanders were popular during the middle ages when the Black Plague was prevalent, as a way of keeping the air "clean". During the 18th century and Regency periods, pomanders made from oranges and cloves became a popular household decoration during the Christmas season, which spread a lovely scent through the home. Participants will make their own orange and clove pomander during this session.

You will need: a firm orange, a packet of whole cloves, a sharp skewer, some wire or ribbon (to hang your ornament), some ribbon (to decorate), some straight pins.

SESSION 3

LIVE: 11.40AM - 12.40PM

ENGLISH PAPER PIECING

Presented by Kelly Lock

Jane Austen, her sister Cassandra, and her mother spent many hours making a quilt using the English Paper Piecing method. This quilt is now on display at Chawton. There is even a reference to it in Jane's letter to her sister in 1811; "have you remembered to collect pieces for the Patchwork? - we are now at a standstill." In this session, participants will learn how to do English Paper Piecing by beginning a small project. This project can be turned into a small pin cushion, or can be made bigger to be a table runner, etc.

You will need: cotton fabric (of different complementary colours/designs), cotton thread, a basic sewing kit (needle, scissors, pins, etc.) Prior to the session, you will need to print the paper templates in the instructions provided, or else you can trace and cut some yourself.

SESSION 4

LIVE: 1PM - 2PM

AUSTEN’S BATH BUNS

Presented by Jess Jenkins

Former MasterChef contestant Jess Jenkins will take us through techniques and a recipe for making the some of the buns that Jane Austen loved, adapting a period recipe for modern kitchens. Jess will talk about the science and history of breadmaking, and discuss with us where bread fits into Austen’s work and life. Bake along or watch now and bake later.

SESSION 5

LIVE: 2.20PM - 3.20PM

IMPROVISED JANE AUSTEN

Presented by Soothplayers

Are you an obstinate headstrong woman who doesn’t mind getting their hem dirty? Or are you a tall and handsome man who’s not too keen on dancing - even though there are plenty of ladies looking for a partner? Come and explore the curious and hilarious characters that could have walked straight out of the pages of a Jane Austen novel. In this very regency appropriate socially distanced show, we will create an entirely new story with our beloved characters right before your very eyes. Lessons will be learned, inheritances plundered and proposals rejected. The performance will be followed by a Q&A session with the cast.

SESSION 6

LIVE: 3.40PM - 4.40PM
